(Arlington, TX) For the Super Bowl it is as much about the build-up and hype as it is about the game. And if it wasn't for the game itself, Super Bowl 45 would have been a complete disaster. Now as the clock starts ticking for Super Bowl XLVI, the league, the players, and the owners are threatening to take the game itself away if they can't figure out how to divide the pie for 2011 and beyond.
The week long events associated with the Super Bowl got off to a bad start and snow-balled from there. A storm that affected 24 states wreaked havoc in Texas and paralyzed the Dallas area with an ice storm early in the week, followed by a snow storm later in the week. Flights in and out of Dallas were cancelled throughout the week with an overall number of 19,906 flights cancelled nationwide during the week - as reported by Flight Aware. Snow and ice did not begin to melt until the day before the Super Bowl when the temperatures reached the mid-40's. The average temperature for Dallas in February is 49.4 degrees.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas were the host of Super Bowl XLV. The new edifice, completed in 2009, came with a price tag of 1.2 billion dollars. It was the second national event in one year with the NBA All-Star Game held on February 14, 2010. That All-Star game was held during the worst snow storm of recorded history in the Dallas area with 12.1 inches of snow. The new stadium did set the highest attendance mark for an NBA game with 108,713 according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Over 111 million viewers made Super Bowl XLV the most watched program in television history while the game attendance of 103,219 fell just short of the record Super Bowl attendance mark of 103.985. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones attempted to keep with the Texas theme of everything is "bigger in Texas" but installation of new seating in the new billion dollar stadium was not up to code prior to the game.
850 fans had to be relocated in the stadium and another 400 were denied entrance because their seats were deemed a hazard by the Arlington, Texas Fire Marshall. A law suit was filed on behalf of the fans who were offered a refund of three times the amount of the ticket plus a future Super Bowl ticket, airfare and transportation to any upcoming Super Bowl.
Two days prior to Super Sunday ice fell off of the curved dome of Cowboys Stadium injuring seven people with one left in critical condition. Streets and pavements throughout the city were left in hazardous condition with temperatures staying below freezing and the lack of snow plows and salt for treatment. The days leading up to the Super Bowl the streets were virtually empty in what would have otherwise been a busy scene for the big event.
With snow and cold temperatures in the forecast the roof to Cowboys Stadium was closed for the game. With the roof closed none of the 100,000 plus fans saw the flyover of the F-18 aircraft after the National Anthem. But they did witness Christina Aguilera's flub of the National Anthem as she left out an entire verse of the song. "I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through," said Aguilera in a statement after the performance.
The five Navy F-18 aircraft were flown in to Texas from Virginia Beach, Virginia to Arlington Texas at a reported cost to the taxpayers of $450,000. based on the operational cost of the F-18 aircraft and the number of hours the pilots to fly. The flyover of five seconds over the closed roof stadium area was a fitting compliment to a botched anthem.
The Bridgestone Halftime showed featured the Black Eyed Peas and followed with controversy from all ends of the spectrum. First there were two distinct perspectives that then mutated into varying lines of cultural and chronological age differences. First there was the view of the live audience compared to those who viewed on TV. There was no way the camera angles seen by the TV viewers could capture what the live audience saw as a whole. That alone accounted for much of the varied reactions.
Good or bad, the Black Eyed Peas made the most effective use of every inch of the entire 120-yard field and the interior rims of the entire stadium to interact with their stage pageantry like never seen before. The electric neon multi-colored light show suited on each of the 1000 plus dancers filled the field complimenting the lights synchronized to the music throughout the stadium circular rims. Surprise performances by Usher and rocker "Slash" of Gun and Roses were an attempt to appeal to an even wider audience.
Typically the NFL alternates in genre of music mixing an "R & B" act every third or fourth year with a classic Rock and Roll band as the staple. Previously, five of the past six acts were classic Rock and Roll bands including, The Who, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney. Prince was the last R & B group to perform in 2007and Janet Jackson in 2004. The Black Eyed Peas are not genre specific and have a black, white, Hispanic, and Asian member in their group. A seemingly good fit for a Super Bowl, but many of the reviews were negative for their performance.
Now the Super Bowl moves from one of the biggest stages to one of the smallest in Indianapolis. This game is contingent on contract negotiations between the NFL owners and the players represented by the NFLPA '" Players Association.
Members of the Indianapolis Host Committee were on hand to see the debacle in Dallas and were quick to point out that they will be prepared for any similar occurrences. On the Monday following the game the city raised a banner at the airport declaring Indianapolis as Host of Super Bowl XLVI. A roof collapsed at the airport under the weight of ice and snow just prior to the banner being raised. The collapsed roof was manufactured by the same company who made the Cowboys Stadium roof and the Minneapolis Metrodome roof that collapsed two months ago.
Lost in all of the hysteria and hype was the final game of the season for the NFL, the Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-25 in Super Bowl XLV. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was named the MVP after passing for 304 yards and 3 touchdowns. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had 262 yards passing with 2 touchdowns but had two interceptions in the loss.
The Packers won four playoff games, all on the road, to claim the teams fourth Super Bowl Championship. The 10-6 Packers squeaked into the playoffs defeating the Philadelphia Eagles, the Atlanta Falcons, the Chicago Bears and beating the Pittsburgh Steelers to take the Lombardi Trophy back to Green Bay. It is the fifth different team to win the Super Bowl in the past fives seasons.
