2002 MINI
If you are looking for a gift for a Lego lover, the 30th Anniversary boxes set of classic mini figures will have them grinning from ear to ear. They are reissued figures of some of the most popular Lego characters from 1978 to 2002. A second series was also released that contains figures from 1978 to 1999 and includes the rare red ninja. The whole premise of the boxed sets is to allow newer collectors the chance to get their hands on some of the classic figures. Please keep in mind that these are reissued pieces and not originals. Any Lego fanatic will be able to tell the difference between the originals and the mini figures in the boxed sets.
Space Man (1978): Done up in a bright red suit, this figure lacks a flip down visor like the modern astronauts. The classic Space logo on the torso is a nice touch but there's nothing all that spectacular about this reissue.
Fire Chief (1981): He's often mistaken for a mailman but he's actually a fire chief. You can tell how far the designers have come with the stenciled detail when you look at the basic imagery on this one and compare it to what is available today. Nice sculpted hat and flesh tone hands but that's about it.
Octan Man (1992): Introduced in 1992, the Octan figure is basic but colorful. He was created to be an attendant in the gas station and tanker themed sets and was slowly branched out to be included in the 4 Juniors and Jack Stone themed series. A must have for Lego collectors of any age!
Prisoner (1996): The prisoner figure is often mistaken for The Brickster but it is an earlier version that eventually evolved into the notorious brick thief. The stenciled black and white stripe pattern and Prisoner ID 23768 add a nice touch. Brickster has two different colored hands whereas the original had two Lego yellow hands.
Mad Scientist (2002): One of my all time favorite mini figures; the Mad Scientist made his debut in the Scary Laboratory set (1382) in 2002 and featured a double face peg. The first side showed a somewhat normal looking face and the reverse had a sinister scientist. So far this has only been in one Lego set so getting it in this boxed collection is a huge perk.
The figures come in a nice box that is easy to wrap and makes for a great gift for any Lego lover. Due to the smaller pieces this is recommended for those ages six and older. This is hard to find in retail stores but you can purchase it online at the Lego World Shop for $17.99. If ordering from a store other than Lego, please make sure that you are getting the boxed set of figures and not random loose pieces.
