Drawing of a portrait using charcoal

Today I decided to publish this portrait charcoal drawing to remind 3 important factors: proportions - chiaro scuro with gray scale - ability to draw free hand and blending color to design volumes.
All this is the base of sketching correctly any type of car or anything.

Sketching well is a matter of training.

Spencer Nugent published this demo on his blog IDSketching.com
His point was to demonstrate how, by exercising hard, we can improve our sketching technique as well as our skills. Back in school my teachers used to say " to draw well you must exercise over and over untill you get sick of it"...they were right!
With this drawing Spencer Nugent shows us exactly the same thing, the blu line drawing is one of his first car drawings ever made and the black line one is a recent one done on an Ipad.
This is a fact, Spencer Nugent is a well known designer and internet professional reference in our field with the website IDSketching.
I think that one of his strong points in drawing is the good sense of perspective and his skill in managing the linework quality.
So what are you waiting for? Go back to your drawings :)

How to sketch a car on paper

Thinking about car sketching on paper I made a short and quick research on internet to find interesting drawings of cars done with a simple pen or pencil.

I found this one which is preatty good and professional and the author also wrote an interesting and complete article about tips on sketching cars correctly on paper.

His principle is to abandon for a while all that computer digital drawing stuff and be concentrate on a real hand made car sketch on white paper, you know me now I totally agree on that!
So I invite you to read the article and tips and see also the tutorial video he posted.

Car Sketch Studio by Mason

 Dear friends,
few days ago I received an email by Mason (the author of this cool sketch) asking for some infos about Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Withe great pleasure I answeared back writing all I knew about ACCD and life down there, how you prepare to be accepted and attend the school.
Mason also asked me to look at some of his car sketches to give him a constructive critique, so I went on his blog named Sketch Studio and I found some real nice car sketches and drawings and , most of all, I discovered he is 15 of age! Yes you got it right!
Mason is 15 years old and is doing a great job on his own at home before going to Design school! He is doing it correctly respecting the good method: ideation sketches, bigger detailed sketches and final illustration et renderings. His skills are already at a good development stage, he needs a school to become a real good designer.
So for those that want to know about real talent, strong motivating passion and hard work check out Mason's blog clicking: Mason Sketch Studio.

Car pencil sketch tutorial

Dear friends,
many times we spoke about how to make a good pencil car sketch and the importance of doing it well. In this video tutorial by IDsketching we have a great demonstration of how to do it. Some of key points to keep in mind:
1. Black pencils super sharpened, 2. clean desk with only paper pad and pecils this is about discipline and order, good organization prevents making mistakes, clean hands not to make our sketch dirty after few minutes, 3. Line quality sketching light before working the depth of our linework, 4. Good perspective and proportions, this is a must to have good sketches in our portfolio 5. Pencil shading, it is like modeling in 2D with a pencil. It is with a good controlled shading that we create dark areas as well as light ones we also create highlights.
