Transportation Design Master UMEA University

 

Dear friends,
last month I have been invited to two final transportation design exam sessions in two different schools: the first in Italy IAAD and the second in Sweden UMEA University.
The 2 Italian days experience at IAAD in Turin
In IAAD Turin based school I had the opportunity to make two conferences on Car Design Management, first day to entry level students and the second day to the last year students. It was a good opportunity to explane a lot of things about design studio organization, project planning and its importance, project management and design strategy. Students were very curious about the topics and many of them asked questions interacting during all lecture period.
We talked also about the importance of making a good professional portfolio and mini-book in order to present themselves for a job application.
First the content of a portfolio which is always the king! Good content good chances to get a job, this is clear to all. However there are still too many students that prepare a portfolio with an approximative quality. We also talked about the rithm of a portfolio which is the interest and emotions it can provoke looking at it. This aspect is strategic and students are not always aware of it!
Before leaving the school I also looked at some portfolios finding some interesting ones and naturally giving some tips and advices.

The 2 Swedesh days experience

UMEA University is based in UMEA Sweden and when I arrived around 9PM I found all restaurants closed already even the one in my hotel kindly payed by the school (as well my trip). Anyway the young and energetic Chair of Transportation Design Dept. Demian Horst was very kind to find a sandwich shop still open offering me the dinner.

It has been my first time to a Swedesh design school and I was very happy about this invitation by the school that I thank a lot.
8 students from different nationalities all of them for final exam for the Master in Transportation Design, so 8 projects presented in 45m each with visuals and scale models.
Everyday 4 students, 2 in the morning time and 2 during the afternoon time.
I was the only external examiner in the committee.
I have to say that I was positively impressed by every student presentation for oral, visuals (in PPT with also videos) and scale models quality. I noticed that in UMEA University there is a good solid cultural preparation about each project breaf done with a serious research and benchmarking study, then brainstorming, sketches, concept choice and final renderings.

Naturally there were differences between students, but overall the level was very good for a year of Master. Coming from the real automotive design industry I noticed feww aspects not really adapted to real world demands and I tryed to help them with my honest critic.

In conclusion I hope to have given a good realistic support to all students, looking to go back to both schools soon!

 Dear friends,

I had the chance to spend 2 days with students of IAAD Italian Design school in Torino. In fact there is IAAD OPEN DAY and  during these 2 days I gave 2 lectures on Portfolio Design management and talk in general about the car designer role as profession. It was an opportunity to reaffirm what I often write on this blog,  students were motivated to ask me lots of questions to become part of my lecture. I tryed to make them active listeners instead of passive ones. I think the experiment worked quite well because all of them followed me for about 2 and a half hours with no interruptions (that was a challange!) and seemed really satisfied at the end.

Harry Bradley car design teacher in ACCD Pasadena

Harry Bradley has been my teacher at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena (here one of his famous drawings) and I decided to tell you about him a bit because he has been for me probably the best teacher I ever had.
Since I often write about drawings, perspective, shading, creativity, skills... I think I have to tell you about Harry.
First of all he was kind of crazy guy with a good humor, but most important he really knew how to teach drawing cars. He would sketch with and for us wih his dark and light graphite old pencils (the yeallow ones remember?), he would take a white paper and start sketching in perfect perspective up side down! Got the point?

IAAD Design school opens the 2010-2011 Academic Degree "Design Sustainable Mobility and Transportation Means".

Turin, Italy September 8th, 2010


The Istituto d’Arte Applicata e Design (IAAD) of Torino, is pleased to officially open the new 2010-2011 academic year, starting, among others, the first Italian course of the 1st level Academic Degree "Design sustainable mobility and transportation means".
The new course, developed in collaboration with the Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche (ISIA) of Firenze, is equivalent to a bachelor's degree, that is a three-year course, enriching the educational offer of IAAD Department of "Transportation design", which boasts the opening of the first course of "Architecture of the Car-body" in Italy since 1978.

Speakers at the conference, the directors of design schools partners - Laura Milani for IAAD Torino and Stefano Bettega for ISIA Firenze - and representatives of local institutions that have contributed to the creation of the course and have made possible the start:

Guido Bolatto, General Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce of Torino
Tom Dealessandri, Vice Mayor of Torino,
Gabriella Serratrice, Head of Universities and Research Institutes of the Piemonte Region,
Umberto D'Ottavio, School buildings, Heritage, Education Councillor in the Province of Torino
Riccardo Rosi, Deputy Director of the Industrial Union of Turin.

The press conference will conclude with the intervention of Mauro Tedeschini, Journalist: "Sustainable Mobility Today, Challenges and Opportunities".
The course was created parallel to the evolution of the mobility system, means of transport and its environmental sustainability, which has taken over time, a major role in developing the economy and culture in our country. To maintain and enhance the international prestige of companies and Italian companies operating in this sector and to increase their ability to compete in a market characterized by ever-increasing globalization processes is essential to establish training programs of excellence able to be seen as centers for research and innovation.

The course is thus divided into educational activities whose purpose is to ensure the development of a teaching model and updated dynamically, based on experiments as a methodological tool. The goal is to train professionals capable of proposing innovative solutions and interpret the socio-cultural awareness and economic market. The centerpiece of the new course, the study of systems and solutions to improve mobility in contemporary society, with particular attention to environmental sustainability.

There will be a limited number of students admitted (30 per each first year), in order to guide the training to practical experiences in designing and providing a highly specialized training. The many forms of collaboration with companies and research centers provide refresher and specialization training content and foster the integration of graduates into employment.

MCE Summer Workshop

Design studio Motorcity Europe (MCE) has announced tha launch of new design workshops that will take place in Cologne, Germany, on August and September 2010. The two- and five-days courses are available in both intermediate and advanced level.

This is a good opportunity to learn fast some basics about car design sketching, modeling and Alias modeling.

How do I choose my Car Design School?

Dear friends,
This is the time everybody is searching for a good Design school to attend next academic year. In Transportation Design , in some ways, it is easier to choose because there are less schools. At the same time all these schools are in competition with each others and offer similar programs, similar methods and similar contacts.

Now the question is: how do I choose my Transportation Design School?

There are some Design schools that are very famous in this discipline like: In USA Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and CCS in Detroit. In Europe we could name Pforzheim Schule in Germany, or State College in ParisFrance, or IAAD and IED in TurinItaly, or UMEAUniversity in Sweden, or MAMI International in MoscowRussia. In Asia TCA Tokyo in Japan and so on.
Now lets’ be careful because all these schools have “similarities” but also “differences” and sometime those differences are important.

Chris Bangle workshop at SPD Milan design school

After the success of last year's summer course Scuola Politecnica di Design
organizes from July 9th to July 15th another workshop with Chris Bangle.
This year the theme of the workshop is “An Endeavor in Discontinuity: Exterior Car Design of the Future”

This will be a unique design experience and it will allow participants from all
over the world to project and work in close contact with one of the most
innovative designers of the current scene.
Beside the workshop there will be the possibility to visit exhibitions and
design show-rooms to make the stay in Milan even more exciting.

Participation to the workshop is open to candidates who have a degree from schools / universities
of design, professionals with significant experience and skills in car design and companies.

Car design rendering by Hussein Al Attar

Hussein Al Attar is a student of Transportation Design at Pforzheim University of Applied Science currently 5th term, a part of his portfolio and skills is visible at Cardesignnews web site at the portfolio session. Hussein has also a page on DeviantArt.
Hussein is a talented student his car sketches are really good, he prefers to use a monochromatic technique with hard and soft black pencil, no backgrounds just his cars drawing in very exciting perspectives.
The rendering here published is an example of how he can go from extreme simplicity to a very flashy digital rendering. The illustration is well done with good perspective and dramatic color choice, high contrast and good control of warm and cool color zone with precise focal point.

Personal Emotional Mobility of the Future
The Paradigm after the Next Car

Personal Mobility denotes a broad range of "vehicle" capabilities that enrich the lives of people everywhere. However, in the future, it is important that designers further grasp our emotional engagement with them.
If sustainable-shared transportation systems for private or public use are to gain wider acceptance, they must be approachable, usable, and enjoyable. The business model for the future of Personal Mobility will depend on the desirability of these products, not merely their ubiquity. And desirability encompasses strong emotional components.

Our future timeframe is ca. 2050, a world in which some demographic characteristics and context are significantly different. Cities currently under pressure to find local solutions to transportation problems will be highly stressed in 2050 if nothing changes. Yet, huge zones of scarcely populated areas in the world must still be supported with affordable mobility. In addition, there will be a greater percentage of aged citizenry, inhomogeneous gender distribution, cultural enfranchisement, and the immediacy of climate, energy and resource issues. All such points will be a part of the designers’ brief in the future and the basis of our challenge today.

There will be many stakeholders in the "ecosystem" of Future Personal Emotional Mobility. The better their agendas are met the more likely the system will prove successful. Governments want control and a healthy source of revenue. Citizens want equality and freedom. Consumers want the best price-performance ratio. Industries want profitable business models that protect their complex investments and intellectual capital. Workers want assured occupation. Obviously, everyone wants a positive climate of economic growth with a fair distribution of wealth. World-over mobility systems are expected to have a minimum negative environmental impact on our planet, while promoting the best use of its resources. And we might all have a bit of fun as well!


In the search for the emotional approach to the components of such a complex system we are able to explore the contribution design makes to our lives. Students are given experience in challenging our settled notions and dogmas in regards to this issue.

The first task students are assigned is the creation of a semantic model of their Personal Emotional Mobility System as a pyramid; starting at the top with a basic and fundamental goal they wish to achieve, filling the successive layers below with ever more detailed descriptions of what such goal entails. The granularity should increase as the pyramid base gets wider; however, all relative ideas and concepts must be contained in the more succinct descriptions of the layers above.

In the next phase, sketches or storyboards of what these worlds could look like, or examples taken from the world of today supportive of argument plausibility will replace the semantic content.

Maintaining a holism of the ideas is important, and we will be presenting our work in mid-process reviews to ensure that the "Top Down" logic remains intact.

The purpose of this pyramidal logic structure is to promote a wider understanding of the inter-relationships of our ideas at both a higher and lower meta-level of description. The students will be tasked with evaluating a scenario in which their lowest meta-level ideas belong to other pyramids of intention, which may even include pyramids of students. Furthermore, they are to observe the implications that insight allows in supporting designs.

The final task involves creating a proposal for the implied design "brief", which can be extracted from one portion of the pyramid base, while accompanying designs of the effects this concept would have were it contained in another pyramid of intent.

Our discussions and critique will focus on the depth of understanding the student expresses in finding the role that emotional content plays in their construct. Particular attention will be placed on the enhancement of design plausibility in the future context. The role that the student’s artwork plays will be evaluated on how well it supports this communication.

Questo progetto in alcune scuole è sponsorizzato da aziende automobilistiche o dell’indotto, in altre scuole è semplicemente un tema libero cioè proposto dall’allievo.
